World Conference on Transformative Education
This new series of books feature stories written for students in grades 3-5. Each book tells the story of a species or group of species that is threatened, the scientists who study them, and ways an individual can help conserve wildlife at home!
The series current includes seven volumes, available online and at select gift shops and bookstores. The team is beginning to plan additional books, too. Watch for updates at the CT website. Learn more about these books at the Conservation Tales website. |

Book Reviews:
“There is a lot to like about this text [PBL in the Earth-Space Science Classroom], and I truly believe that teachers will both like it and use it. Implementing PBL is difficult for teachers, and few curriculum guides are available to support their efforts. This book fills that gap by providing the kinds of strategies and examples teachers need to facilitate open-ended inquiry in their science classrooms.” (Peggy A. Ertmer, Professor Emerita of Learning Design and Technology, Purdue University, and Founding Editor of the Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning) What happens when you mix a dynamic and unique approach to learning with fundamental aspects of science? You get Problem-Based Learning in the Life Science Classroom: K-12, by veteran educators Tom J. McConnell, Joyce Parker and Janet Eberhardt. Based on the idea that by offering students complex scenarios that have real-life relevancy (like learning how we digest our food and how environmental issues impact local economies), they develop a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and become more engaged in the classroom. This book is a thorough but easily digestible guide to PBL and its applications to life science learning. The guide includes detailed lesson plans, interesting activities, sections which focus on “conceptual barriers” that can pose a threat to students’ understanding, useful information about safe and ethical practices and alignment with Next Generation Science Standards. Overall, this book is impressive in its depth and sure to be a helpful resource for all kindergarten to grade 12 science teachers looking to increase understanding, rather than just knowledge." – (MH, Green Teacher, Vol 111, Fall 2016) |
